🇮🇳 Apple is significantly accelerating its shift of iPhone production from China to India, aiming to mitigate tariff and geopolitical risks.

🎯 The goal is to import the majority of iPhones sold in the US from India by the end of next year, potentially doubling Indian production to over 80 million units.

🤖 Apple is restructuring its AI efforts, moving its robotics team under hardware leadership, indicating ongoing challenges in keeping pace with AI advancements.

@bernardodegarcia:
“Let’s go to Cupertino with a double news item, if I’m not mistaken. There it is. Cupertino shares are also recovering. Apple seeks to import the majority of iPhones sold in the United States from India by the end of next year, accelerating a shift away from China to mitigate risks related to tariffs and geopolitical tensions. The goal means Apple will approximately double its annual iPhone production in India to over 80 million units, according to 100 people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified. Apple assembled just over 40 million iPhones in India last year through the fiscal year ending March 2025. It sells more than 60 million iPhones annually in the United States alone. The plans are the latest sign that Apple and its suppliers are accelerating a move away from China, a process that began when harsh COVID lockdowns hampered production at its largest plant. Tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump, as well as tensions between Beijing and Washington, are prompting Apple and other companies to amplify this effort. But staying with Apple, it continues to withdraw its effort and is now practically withdrawing its secret unit, no longer secret, of robotics from the command of its AI chief. The latest restructuring in response to the company’s difficulties with AI. Apple plans to relocate the robotics team from the AI organization to the hardware division later this month, according to people with knowledge of the move. This will place it under Senior Vice President John Ternus, who oversees hardware engineering, according to 100 people who, as always, ask not to be identified because the change is not public. The pending change will mark the second major project taken away from Giannandrea, okay? In the last month, the company eliminated, as we know, the struggling Bot City assistant from his scope in March. The changes are part of a broader effort to catch up in AI, a field where Apple has lagged significantly behind tech peers like Google, OpenAI, and perhaps also Meta.”
