📉 Nvidia stock fell nearly 7% after revealing a $5.5 billion charge related to US export controls on its H20 GPUs to China.
🇨🇳 Despite the new restrictions and financial impact, CEO Jensen Huang visited Beijing, meeting with Chinese officials and the founder of AI company DeepSeek.
🔍 The timing of the visit, shortly after the export ban announcement and a dinner with Donald Trump, raises questions about Nvidia’s strategy navigating US-China tech tensions.
@bernardodegarcia:
“The chip giant Nvidia came to lose almost 7%, let’s see if we have them here, Nvidia lost almost 7% yesterday after revealing a quarterly charge of about $5.5 billion linked to the export of its H20 graphic processing units or GPUs to China and other destinations due to US export controls. Other stocks like AMD also fell significantly, 7%, or ASML, which had its quarterly results, also suffered losses as markets realized that the greater uncertainty derived from the new president’s tariff plans could affect chip demand, in my opinion, no… Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang arrived in Beijing this morning, shortly after the Trump administration banned the company from selling the H20 artificial intelligence chip to China. Huang, a frequent visitor to the country, traveled to Beijing at the invitation of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, according to a post by Yu Yuan Tan Tian, an affiliated social media account of China Central Television, the state-owned enterprise. However, the timing of his trip was unusual given that the CEO dined with President Donald Trump about a week ago, only to warn days later about a $5.5 billion reduction due to the H20 restrictions. Events are piling up for Jensen Huang. The US government informed Nvidia on Monday that the H20 would require a license to export to China indefinitely. The new rules address concerns by Washington that the covered products could be used in or diverted to a supercomputer in China, the company stated in a document we saw, and if not, we will also see this weekend. Subsequently, a bipartisan committee of the US House of Representatives urged Nvidia to provide information on chip sales that the Chinese Artificial Intelligence company DeepSeek might have used to develop its innovative chatbot.”
