🚗 Tesla obtained permission from the California Public Utilities Commission to operate a transportation service in the state.

🚦 This permit is a first step, but it does not yet cover testing or deployment of autonomous vehicles.

🛣️ The permit is aimed at companies wishing to offer pre-arranged transportation services, such as round-trip tourist tours.

@bernardodegarcia:
“Tesla obtained permission yesterday from the California Public Utilities Commission to operate a transportation service in the state, marking its first step in a long regulatory process that could pave the way for its robotaxi service in the state. The automaker received a charter-party carrier permit that does not cover testing or deployment of autonomous vehicles, meaning the company owns and controls a fleet of vehicles and uses its employees as drivers for now. Unlike standard ridesharing permits, this TCP, so to speak, is aimed at companies that want to offer pre-arranged transportation services, such as round-trip tourist tours and so on, according to the commission. A Transportation Network Company (TNC) permit, under which Uber and Lyft operate, allows companies to use app-based platforms to connect passengers with drivers using their personal vehicles. As we are seeing, it is taking these first steps to eventually pave the way, and perhaps by June, have robotaxis in Texas and also in California.”
